Local government taxation and funding remain a key focus for Georgia lawmakers as the House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Local Government Taxation, Funding, and Budgeting continues its work during the 2026 legislative interim.
Created by House Speaker Jon Burns, the committee is charged with examining Georgia’s local funding mechanisms with an emphasis on transparency, fairness for taxpayers, and fiscal accountability for local governments. State Representative Chas Cannon (R-Moultrie) serves as chairman. The committee includes 11 additional House members representing communities across the state.
At its second meeting on August 19, the committee turned its attention to the financial operations of local governments. Discussion and testimony focused on local government investment requirements, the use of undesignated reserves, financing options, the impacts of House Bill 244, audit compliance, and the underwriting and issuance of bonds and other forms of financing.
For the commercial real estate community, the committee’s work is particularly important because changes to local revenue structures, taxation, and budgeting can directly affect property owners, businesses, development, and investment decisions across Georgia.
The committee is scheduled to meet again on Wednesday, September 23, at 10:00 a.m. in Moultrie.
